In: SEO

If you are working or running a website and working in digital marketing, then you both have noticed that there are some serious ups and downs in Google rankings this year. Google has majorly rolled out four algorithm updates  in 2025, and each of these four updates has taken these results. Let’s understand what has happened, why it matters and what needs to be done to keep your website performing well.

What has happened and changed in 2025?

Google has released three core updates, and one major update throughout the year.

Each update has its own significance. These changes or updates in the algorithm have also changed how Google ranks the websites. On one side some websites saw their traffic grow, while on the other side some websites watched their rankings drop overnight. So if you understand what Google is looking for, you can thrive in this competitive phase.

Core Update March 2025

This was the first major update which started on 13 March, and it finished rolling out on 27th of March. It took almost around 14 days to complete and create one of the most volatile such results.

Changes

The target of this update was low quality forum content. In the previous 18 months, forum sites have been ranking extremely well but this came to an end in March.

Many four websites saw a dramatic drop in their visibility. However, this case is not the same for all the forums. Reddit actually continues to gain visibility and rankings while the smaller forum sites saw a decline significant in its own way. Google also targeted the websites that relied heavily on the pro programmatic content. The websites which had hundreds or thousands of thin pages created just to capture the search traffic likely got a hit.

The updates affected the various types of best sites like forum websites, the websites with mass generated programmatic pages, low value sites or the user generated content platforms which didn’t add editorial value.

The high authority, health finance, government websites, sites with original content and the website demonstrating real expertise got benefit of this algorithm update.

Core Update June 2025

This algorithm update was rolled out between June 30 and July 17. This update continued many of the friends which we saw in March, but with more emphasis on the expertise and authority.

Changes

This update emphasised on something called as EEAT, which stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. With this update, Google got better in identifying the content that was created by the real experts versus the content, which was written just to rank.

The update is relevant as it introduced advanced ways for Google to know and understand what users actually want when they are searching. AI overviews became more prominent in this period. AI overviews refer to the AI generated summary which appears at the top of the search results. They extended their area by becoming more common and appearing in about 25% of the searches at their peak, this reduced how many people clicked through the websites.

The news publishers, health sites, shopping and e-commerce websites and sport websites saw major changes. decides that had previously been affected by the Google 2023 helpful content update so the recoveries during this space of core update in June 2025 while the websites without strong authority signals struggle during this phase. The websites with strong author credentials, clear expertise demonstrated websites, good technical performance websites succeeded in this update.

Spam update, August 2025

The August 2025, spam update was different from the core updates. It started around the 26th of August and ended on 22nd of September. It took nearly 27 days to complete. Algorithm updates specifically targeted the website while Google’s spam policies.

Changes

Google AI power detection system, which is called SpamBrain, got smarter over the period of time  significantly. The update emphasises on catching manipulative tactics. This includes paid link schemes, private block networks, pages, hidden text and then is leading text, including thin affiliate content.

Spam updates are more targeted. So if you were following best practices you might have seen the improvements, while for the ones using any sort of sketchy tactics the impact could be severe.

Google it clear that shortcuts don’t work anymore. Only sustainable strategy is the way to build and lead genuine Authority through quality content and natural link building.

Core Update December 2025

This is the most recent update. It began rolling out on 11th of December 2025. This is the third core update of the year and follows the pattern which we have observed throughout the year 2025.

Google describes it as a regular update, which is designed to better surface the relevant and satisfying content for the searches across all the types of sites. The update is global and affects all regions and languages. Multiple monitoring platforms have registered for the substantial ranking shift following the announcement.

The key themes of this update include content quality over quantity, trustworthiness, authoritative sources, real expertise, content that genuinely helps people and first hand experience.

What do all these updates mean for your website?

  1. Previously, you could publish hundreds of thin pages and rank well in the ranking system, but these days this won’t work anymore. Google is prioritising better pages that truly help users. Maintaining the quality of your content is very crucial.
  2. Google has gotten better identifying the real experts, so you have to show your credentials while highlighting your experience.
  3. Websites with fast slow content, mobile optimisation, clear and clean design and easy navigation are all that matters and grow. The websites with poor user experiences and speed are struggling even with the good content.
  4. AI overviews are becoming more common and few people are clicking through two websites for simple queries.
  5. Shortcuts, don’t work anymore. So if you are using spam tactics, paid links or keyboard stuffing, then these practices are more risky than ever and one spam update can wipe out your work for years.

Strategy to sustain in the long-run

Google will keep updating its algorithm because with the passage of time, it becomes the need of the hour to update. There will be more core updates, spam updates. So the long-term goal should be building a website that generally helps the users with its authentic and quality content. Emphasise on creating a website that serves the best interest of the users in the most presentable way while avoiding any sort of shortcuts. The fundamentals remain the same irrespective of the changes in the game. These fundamentals are all about creating quality content for real people while displaying your expertise.

Conclusion

The algorithm updates in the year 2025 have been crucial. The only goal of Google behind all these updates is to show its users helpful, authentic, and expert content from the sites that give a good experience. It’s not the time to panic if you have been hit by these updates, instead, you can focus on the updates and change your websites accordingly while securing your place. For the ones who remain unaffected and seem, it’s time for you to focusing and improving your content while building an authority that focuses on user experience.
